How to Drill a Great Well . . . . . . .
You only get to drill your new well once. At Kings River Drilling, we know that our customers are best served by designing and constructing a water well that is efficient and has longevity. This requires an understanding of proper well design, water well drilling techniques, construction materials, underground geology, logging, well development, and grouting techniques.
Enough groundwater must be found to meet the pumping requirements of the customer. Our drilling techniques maximize the yield of every well.
To determine whether the desired amount of groundwater is available at a particular location, we rely on our vast knowledge of the area, addition we use DWR groundwater maps, land surface topography, vegetation patterns, local geology, groundwater chemistry, information on thickness, depth, and permeability of local aquifers from existing wells, groundwater levels, and aerial photographs.
In many cases, the well location is limited by the property dimensions, the need to keep plumbing and wiring to a minimum, and access restrictions for the drilling equipment. When locating a well, we consider the proximity of potential sources of contamination such as chemical storage areas, animal enclosures, flood zones, and leach fields or septic tanks.
Our overall objective of the well design is to create a stable, long-lasting, efficient well that has enough space for the pump, allows ground water to move effortlessly, and minimizes sediment intrusion from the aquifer.
The annular space between the well casing, and borehole wall is filled with a special gravel (filter pack). The filter pack retards sand and fine sand particles from moving from the geology into the well. Unfortunately, the filter pack sometimes does not always exclude the finest silt or clay particles.
The uppermost section of the annular space is normally sealed with a bentonite material (called HolePlug) or with a cement grout to ensure that neither water nor contamination enters into the annulus from the surface. The depth to which grout or bentonite must be placed varies by county but is usually at least 20 feet.
