Groundwater

We are fortunate because there is groundwater in most places in the Central Valley. However, there are a few areas that have groundwater issues. Water quality in most areas is fairly good with some pockets and zones of hard-water and other areas with chemical contamination. Groundwater levels are also changing and this knowledge is very important for site selection. So if you are considering purchasing a home or a parcel in a rural area, it would be beneficial to speak with us about the best areas for the cleanest and best tasting groundwater. We have had our drilling license since 1986 and we know the area.

Water Well Drilled by Kings River Drilling

We know where the water is.

Water Wells

At Kings River Drilling & Pump Service , we have the capacity to drill and repair domestic wells . There are special techniques to get the most amount of water out of each well (borehole). This takes knowledge of the geology, the aquifer, and soil types. Also, there are important mechanical requirements and techniques to maximize the efficiency of the borehole for water production. Our staff has been factory-trained in multiple drilling methods and are involved in continuing education.

Submersible Pumps

Not all pumps are a good choice for all wells. Did you know that a submersible pump is really a combination of an electric motor that is bolted to a “pump-end”? And there are two major types of “pump-ends”. Each pump-end has its own characteristics and preferred type of use depending on the sanding characteristics and pressure requirements of the well.

Submersible pumps should be engineered properly using pump-curves and total dynamic-head graphs to determine the best performing combination. Sadly to say, the ability to properly design the correct system components is not universally understood in our industry. Only a few of us in the Valley have become “Master Installers” as recognized by the pump manufacturers. The better design, the longer the submersible pump will last. So for water well pump repair, call the experts, Kings River Drilling & Pump Service.

Pressure Tanks

What is the correct pressure tank size? Some people think the pressure tank is a holding tank. Yes, the pressure tank holds a few gallons of water but that is not the purpose of the tank. The pressure tank sizing is very important. This modulates the on/off performance of the pump. First, you do not want your pump to turn on and off too often. The submersible pump is only designed to turn on and off so many times a day. The pressure tank helps keep this in balance. But did you know, the pressure tank is also used to help cool the pump motor? This requires a certain minimum pump run-time to accomplish this.

There are two different types of pressure tanks. The oldest type of pressure tank is a galvanized steel tank . This pressure tank requires three different valves to operate properly to maintain the right proportion of air and water within the tank. The galvanized tanks require periodic maintenance and should have the valves replaced every couple of years. Otherwise, the tank will become “water-logged”. A “water-logged” tank will cause rapid cycling of the on/off power to the submersible pump which could damage the pump.

The second type of pressure tank is a bladder tank . This has become the preferred type of pressure tank. The bladder tank has an intertube type device inside the tank. These tanks require proper pressure settings. If the pressure in the bladder is not correct, it may cause early failure of the submersible pump.

Pressure Control

There are two types of units that control the pressure to the house. The simplest control is called a pressure switch. It acts like an on/off light switch and works within a specific pressure range. If the pressure is too low, the pressure switch will turn the pump on. When the pressure gets too high, the pressure switch turns the pump off. This simple system produces a certain amount of high and low-pressure variation which is most noticeable with sprinklers in landscape areas. Most rural properties have this type of pressure system. It is the easiest to diagnose if there is a problem and it is the least costly to fix.

Larger estates prefer more of a constant water pressure. This can be accomplished with a “variable frequency drive” (variable speed) controller. This is a computerized system that is more costly but maintains a constant pressure both in the house and outside.

Low Flow Wells

Some wells do not produce very much water. Properties with low flow wells often have large storage tanks. Water flows slowly from the well into the storage tank (usually at night) . And from the storage tank, a booster pump is used to produce both the pressure and flow to the residence. This type of system is very practical but does require more parts and plumbing. For low flow wells, we usually recommend adding a PumpSaver which is a small computer that protects the pump if the well momentarily runs dry. The PumpSaver allows the groundwater to recover within the well before allowing the pump to turn back on. This is a very common and effective solution.
